Karma

Five schools of Indian philosophy, compared

What each school says

Advaita Vedanta
In Advaita philosophy, dharma is considered a qualified aspect of karma (cite: edge_018544). This means that dharma, or righteous living, is closely related to karma, but they are not exactly the same thing (cite: edge_018126). According to Advaita, dharma is helpful in the rise of knowledge and is also involved in the enjoyment of the fruits of our deeds (cite: edge_018604, cite: edge_018991). Dharma is seen as a way to ward off evil consequences and is considered a virtuous deed that originates from the same source as knowledge (cite: edge_019482, cite: edge_018708). Dvaita Vedanta
In the school of Dvaita, the concept of karma is closely related to the atman, or individual self, which is considered the cause of karma (cite: edge_008060). The atman's actions and intentions are seen as influencing the results of karma (cite: edge_007736). Dharma, or righteous living, is also seen as a qualified aspect of karma, with certain duties and paths being considered part of karma (cite: edge_000250). Additionally, the Dvaita school suggests that dharma can be both a qualified aspect of and distinct from karma, depending on the context (cite: edge_007809, edge_007795). Vishishtadvaita
In the school of Vishishtadvaita, karma is considered a qualified aspect of dharma, meaning that it is connected to one's duties and responsibilities (cite: edge_006524). Karma is also seen as being influenced by the atman, or the individual self, which can be the cause of karma (cite: edge_001850). Additionally, karma can have an impact on the atman, with the accumulation of karma potentially affecting the atman (cite: edge_006212). Overall, the relationship between karma and dharma is complex, with karma being a part of dharma and also being influenced by the atman (cite: edge_006159).
Achintya Bhedabheda
In the achintya_bhedabheda school of philosophy, the concept of karma is closely related to the atman, or the self, which is considered the cause of karma (cite: edge_002740). Karma is also seen as a qualified aspect of dharma, or duty, with certain actions being considered as part of one's duty (cite: edge_004432). The atman is distinct from karma and is not entangled by the activities performed due to contact with material bodies (cite: edge_004057). The school also suggests that dharma is a qualified aspect of karma, with prescribed duties being performed with a certain mentality (cite: edge_004368).
Dvaitadvaita
According to the dvaitadvaita school of philosophy, dharma is closely related to karma, with many sources suggesting that dharma is a qualified aspect of karma (cite: edge_024286). In fact, several texts indicate that dharma is a key component of karma, influencing an individual's actions and their consequences (cite: edge_021853). Dharma can also be seen as a cause of karma, with good deeds and righteous behavior leading to positive karma (cite: edge_025843). Overall, the relationship between dharma and karma is complex, with dharma playing a significant role in shaping an individual's karma (cite: edge_026312).
Buddhism (Pali Canon)
In Buddhist philosophy, karma is distinct from dharma (cite: edge_010301). Karma can be a cause of dharma, but the confidence in this relationship is low (cite: edge_008874). On the other hand, dharma is often seen as a cause of karma, with a higher confidence level (cite: edge_009656). Additionally, karma is sometimes considered a qualified aspect of dharma, although the confidence in this relationship is also low (cite: edge_010337).
